What novelty or innovation does your product bring to Arbitrum?
Kuroro Beasts is one of the OG web3 gaming projects, started in November 2021.
We have mechanics to our games that are unique to the creature-collecting genre, such as our creature-collecting RPG with real-time action combat (launching soon) and our online PvP Brawler (Beast Brawl).

Our ecosystem currently has had 4000avg DAU participating for the past 3 months.

Is your project composable with other projects on Arbitrum? If so, please explain:
Yes, we are part of Treasure DAO.

We already have several TreasureDAO Projects integrated into our game (The Beacon, KOTE, Zeeverse, Smolverse.

As well as several high-quality projects from other ecosystems (Pixelmon, CyberKongz, FRWC, The Wanderers, Ether Orcs, Kaiju Kingz) and more coming!

Do you have any comparable protocols within the Arbitrum ecosystem or other blockchains?
The closest comparisons to what we are doing, but from different perspectives are:
Axie Infinity (Ronin)
Pixelmon (Immutable)

How do you measure and think about retention internally? (metrics, target KPIs)
Well, we have retention Metrics as part of our gaming ecosystem akin to how web2 games track their retention. Right now our numbers are on par with high-quality web2 games and we are only in Alpha, much left to optimize still, especially around Day 1.

Relevant usage metrics:

  • Total users 80k+ (65k+ connected wallets)
  • 4000 avg DAU last 3 months (9k peak)
  • 5500avg DAU last 7 days
  • 26k MAU
  • Retention on par to good web2 games (30% Day 1, 15% Day 7, 5%+ Day 30)
  • $235k+ IAP last 2 months

You can find here a Data Room Dashboard with more info

Do you agree to remove team-controlled wallets from all milestone metrics AND exclude team-controlled wallets from any incentives included in your plan:
Yes

Did you utilize a grants consultant or other third party not named as a grantee to draft this proposal? If so, please disclose the details of that arrangement here, including conflicts of interest (Note: this does NOT disqualify an applicant):
No

SECTION 2b: PROTOCOL DETAILS

Provide details about the Arbitrum protocol requirements relevant to the grant. This information ensures that the applicant is aligned with the technical specifications and commitments of the grant.

Is the protocol native to Arbitrum?: Yes

On what other networks is the protocol deployed?: No

What date did you deploy on Arbitrum mainnet?: Jul 5 2023

Do you have a native token?: Planned $KURO. Kuroro Beasts

Past Incentivization: None

Current Incentivization: Play to Airdrop.

Have you received a grant from the DAO, Foundation, or any Arbitrum ecosystem-related program?:
Yes. We are in the process of completing it and currently have completed 2/4 of our Milestones. The entirety of the grant has been allocated towards development.

We have crushed every KPI thus far, growing by:

  • 80k+ Registered Users
  • 4000+ avg DAU (over 3 + months)
  • 9k DAU peak
  • 250k+ new followers on Twitter (330k+ total)
  • 15k+ new users on Discord (43k+ total)
  • $230k+ IAP past since Jan

Protocol Performance:

  • Launched our first game
  • 80k+ unique registered users
  • Currently at 5k+ avg DAU for the past 3 weeks
  • $4m+ in total primary revenue
  • $5m+ in total secondary traded volume
  • $2.5m+ in TVL bridged from Ethereum to Arbitrum
  • Launching our RPG in March 2024

You can find here a Data Room Dashboard with more info

Protocol Roadmap:

  • Launching Kuroro Wilds (Action combat RPG) - Q1 2024
  • Launching the Kuroro Ancients PFP Collection - Q2 2024
  • Beast Brawl Mobile Compatibility - Q2 2024
  • $KURO TGE - Mid 2024

Audit History & Security Vendors: Not currently, but working on it for existing contracts and upcoming TGE. Most of our current logic for our games is off-chain, but will add audits when we launch the token and once we have more on-chain logic.

Security Incidents: None, with two migrations on our back.

SECTION 3: GRANT INFORMATION

Requested Grant Size: 150k $ARB

Justification for the size of the grant:

Without being an insane amount with 150k ARB we can achieve incredibly ambitious objectives with the way we have set up our use cases for the grant. And we are offering an ambitious grant match to go with it, putting skin in the game as well.

We are one of the most (if not the most) active games in the Arbitrum network right now with 4k+ average DAU for the past 3 months, close to 80k registered users (Discord + wallet connected) without having launched yet our biggest Product, our RPG (Kuroro Wilds) with which we are expecting to do multiples on the total users registered we are seeing today and the Daily Active Users.

This makes us one of the most promising gaming ecosystems in Arbitrum. Multiple displays indicate this if you look at our liveliness on social media and the current numbers we are hitting without launching our biggest Product set yet (coming Q1 and Q2 2024).

We have proven to be very good at setting incentive structures and Product flywheels and turning that into revenue with over $4m in direct sales, $5m in secondary volume in total, and over $230k in IAP just in 2024, all while fully bootstrapped (raising a Seed now).

We like having skin in the game too, so we will match the incentive grant with 5m or 0.5% of the $KURO ecosystem token supply to power it even more.

The idea is to run a pilot of what a big content creator marketing campaign tied to user incentives can do to the momentum we are already seeing and create a play book for other Arbitrum gaming projects too.

Grant Matching: 5m or 0.5% of $KURO, our upcoming token.

Grant Breakdown: We will make 2 calculated bets.

1) 50k $ARB for Marketing
Working with 3 to 5 prestigious web2 Content Creators and ESports organizations in a 12-week long program.

  • We are already in advanced convo with big web2 content creators such as Mystic7 (2.5m subscribers on youtube), and Esport Orgs such as Talon Sports, and already have others in mind we are reaching out to.

  • A content creator that size charges upwards of 10k USD per month to produce videos 2 shorts and 1 longer form video for a project. But the benefit from the exposure they can offer, we are betting, both in direct and secondary order effects will surpass that of the investment.

  • If we succeed this will set the groundwork for some of the biggest content creators in the world to help us spread the word about the benefits of Arbitrum and web3 gaming.

  • We have already proven this works, at a smaller scale, with our referral program and content creators. We currently have 30k total users that have registered through Referrals, and over 2775 that have turned into Paid or Power Users (Qualified Referrals).

  • Most of them come from web2 native content creators that are turning into web3 such as sonercarox (our #1 ranked with close to 800 referrals by himself, 78 Qualified).

  • The average spend per spending user this year is $126 in our ecosystem (data from Helika’s Kuroro Dashboard), which means an average of $349,650 in spend with the users we have been able to obtain through referrals with smaller Web 2 content creators

  • All of these purchases transform into limited edition NFTs that live inside Arbitrum, effectively locking value in the Arbitrum ecosystem into assets that produce even more recyclable transactions through trading and secondary sales.

This is spending $0 on Marketing up front, with mid to small-sized web2 content creators incentivized by our games and referral program for our own token, $KURO.

The most influential channel for User Acquisition in gaming right now is Social Media and big influencers and content creators hold the power to make or break a game or a trend (look at how well it went with Palworld and others).

Funny coincidence on this Twitter interaction with Derek Lau (former VP of Immutable and Guild of Guardians) at the time we ware finishing this application

We will make sure the deals include both Kuroro Beasts and Arbitrum when it comes to these content creators and organizations. We will also share their contacts with the Arbitrum Foundation and other gaming institutions within Arbitrum.

  • We will track the performance of the influencers/organizations and share their numbers with the DAO and council.
  • We will have full disclosure of the deal structures and documents signed with the council.

The timing for this is perfect with Arbitrum Arcade and all the gaming initiatives happening in Arbitrum.

Additionally:

  • All deals will have at least a portion tied to KPIs from the content partners.
  • If we can’t allocate all $ARB between 3 to 5 entities and or if they fail to meet their KPIs and there is $ARB left, we will allocate it towards new deals and share them with the council.

KPIs:

  • Doubling the users from Referrals (passing 60k in total)
  • Onboarding at least 3 reputable content creators or Esport Orgs on to the Kuroro/Arbitrum program

2) 100k $ARB and 500k or 0.5% of the $KURO supply to tap into existing Web3 gamers:
Specially dedicated initiative with 100k ARB and 5m (0.5%) $KURO (our upcoming token - valuation not disclosed but ranging between 20 to 50m USD in FDV for the current round).

The target here is bringing players from other exiting web3 gaming ecosystems into Kuroro and Arbitrum.

We will create a special Onboarding and Marketing campaign with Achievements and Experience (using the existing infrastructure already built for our existing Play to Airdrop directed towards other existing web3 gaming ecosystems outside of Arbitrum.

The objective here is running a “Vampire Tactic” incentivizing existing web3 gamers from ecosystems such as Immutable, Solana, Ronin, Polygon, Avax, and others to come check out Kuroro and on board them into Arbitrum gaming.

KPIs:

  • Increasing DAU/DAW from 3k/9k avg to 6k/18k avg.
  • Have 25% of the Kuroro user base have web3 gaming accounts, assets, or tokens in other existing web3 gaming Protocols.

Data below for reference on current DAU/WAU for Kuroro Beasts.

We already have good retention mechanisms, and working on improving them, especially with room to optimize Day 1 retention a lot more.

SECTION 4: GRANT OBJECTIVES, EXECUTION AND MILESTONES

Objectives: Grow Kuroro to 2x of current users and transfer that upside to the Arbitrum and Arbitrum gaming ecosystems.

Execution Strategy:

For Use 1) Web 2 Marketing

  • On board 3 to 5 highly notable content creators (hundreds of thousands to millions of followers in social media) or/and ESports organizations on a 12 week content creation and content support program for Kuroro and Arbitrum gaming.
  • 50k $ARB will be used for this purpose.
  • Performance will be tracked with sign-up links we will provide to the creators/orgs.
  • We will share the contracts with the council.
  • We will share the data and performance with the DAO and council.

KPIs:

  • Doubling the users from Referrals (going from 30k to 60k in total)
  • Onboarding at least 3 reputable content creators or Esport Orgs on to the Kuroro/Arbitrum program

For Use 2) Web 3 Targeting:
We will create a system of Badges and Quests similar to the one that can be found on our Airdrop Dashboard.

  • Token distribution will be based on a Leaderboard based on participation and completion of Badges and Quests
  • Badges will be tied to playing Kuroro Beasts games.
  • Quests will be tied to social activities and completing certain actions within the Arbitrum ecosystem.
  • Distribution to incentivize higher participation in Kuroro and overlap with the Arbitrum gaming ecosystem.

Similar to what Pixels did on their 2nd P2A after bridging to Ronin.

KPIs:

  • Increasing DAU/DAW from 3k/9k avg to 6k/18k avg.
  • Have 25% of the Kuroro user base have web3 gaming accounts, assets, or tokens in other existing web3 gaming Protocols.

What mechanisms within the incentive design will you implement to incentivize “stickiness” whether it be users, liquidity or some other targeted metric?

  • The system mentioned in the 2nd use will be the main means to stickiness, onboarding people to $ARB and $KURO
  • We also have several in-game mechanisms involving free paths to become a web3 user (already in place) via which players can earn NFTs by playing for FREE
  • Of course, the games themselves will be the biggest sticky factor, we strive to create good games and beautiful experiences first and foremost, and our retention numbers for an Alpha stage are already looking promising.
  • Rewards will be vested, ensuring even further stickiness as part of the distribution mechanisms themselves.

Specify the KPIs that will be used to measure success in achieving the grant objectives and designate a source of truth for governance to use to verify accuracy:

  • Doubling the users from Referrals (going from 30k to 60k in total)
  • Onboarding at least 3 reputable content creators or Esport Orgs on to the Kuroro/Arbitrum program
  • Increasing DAU/DAW from 3k/9k avg to 6k/18k avg
  • Have 25% of the Kuroro user base have web3 gaming accounts, assets, or tokens in other existing web3 gaming Protocols

Source of Truth: It can be both our current Data Rooms we share with the Foundation as part of our Grant Program and on-chain activity when applicable, a Dune Dashboard.

Grant Timeline and Milestones:
3 months for the Content Creator activation + Web 3 Targeting Incentives Program.

  • Grant Approval: Initial Unlock (important to be able to close Content Creators/Orgs)

  • Month 1 (Late April):
First Content from Content Creators/Esports Orgs.
Announcement of the Incentives Program with the ARB/$KURO match.
    10% overlap with other ecosystems.
    10k ARB to content creators
    4k DAU/12k WAU

  • Month 2 (May):
Incentives Program with the ARB/$KURO match.
All 3+ creators/orgs on boarded and producing content.
    15k ARB to content creators
    5k DAU/15k WAU

  • Month 3 (June):
    End of the Incentives campaign.
Final content being produced signaling at whats coming.
    Data and KPI evaluation/assesment.
    Rewards distribution.
    25k ARB to content creators
    6k DAU/18k WAU
25% overlap with other web3 ecosystems.

How will receiving a grant enable you to foster growth or innovation within the Arbitrum ecosystem?

  • Web 2 content creators have the largest influence in causing a game to become highly popular.
  • Our biggest challenge to onboard web2 users is changing the sentiment and narrative around web3 gaming.
  • User acquisition in web2 gaming circles at an average of $3 per install.
  • Web3 has proven to lower UA costs and improve retention, we have managed to onboard 65k+ users and achieve great retention with $0 upfront marketing spending.
  • This allocation will help us achieve multiples of that, change sentiment around web3 gaming, and create key connections within Arbitrum gaming and big web2 content creators.
  • All of these users we onboard have a path of progressions to web3 via NFTs they can earn for FREE via playing in our games.
  • They will now also have the chance to get $ARB and $KURO further strengthening the stickiness we are already seeing with the retention shown above.
  • Kuroro alone already has > $2.5m in TVL that bridged from Ethereum through are NFTs when we ported over to Arbitrum.
  • We will further strengthen this with the Web3 user-targeted campaign as well.

Do you accept the funding of your grant streamed linearly for the duration of your grant proposal, and that the multisig holds the power to halt your stream? Yes

SECTION 5: Data and Reporting

OpenBlock Labs has developed a comprehensive data and reporting checklist for tracking essential metrics across participating protocols. Teams must adhere to the specifications outlined in the provided link here: Onboarding Checklist from OBL . Along with this list, please answer the following:

Is your team prepared to comply with OBL’s data requirements for the entire life of the program and three months following and then handoff to the Arbitrum DAO? Are there any special requests/considerations that should be considered?
Yes we are. And I dont think so. We have been working like this with the Arbitrum Foundation too without issue.

Does your team agree to provide bi-weekly program updates on the Arbitrum Forum thread that reference your OBL dashboard?
Happy to!
We have several data Dashboards prepared for this as part of the data we share with the Arbitrum Foundation, Investors, Advisors and Partners.

Does your team agree to provide a final closeout report not later than two weeks from the ending date of your program? This report should include summaries of work completed, final cost structure, whether any funds were returned, and any lessons the grantee feels came out of this grant. Where applicable, be sure to include final estimates of acquisition costs of any users, developers, or assets onboarded to Arbitrum chains. (NOTE: No future grants from this program can be given until a closeout report is provided.)
Yes

Does your team acknowledge that failure to comply with any of the above requests can result in the halting of the program’s funding stream?:
Yes

Firstly, we would like to thank you for your detailed proposal that shows a comprehensive look. We are aware of the significance of web3 gaming projects and their place in the ecosystem. With the team behind which has a deep background, the project’s potential is quite exciting. When we consider the requested amount and how it will be used in the process, we support the given plan and strategy. Despite our support, we should also mention that a noticeable amount of grant is allocated to marketing and enhancing the user numbers. Therefore, we expect the mentioned marketing metrics to be transparently reported in terms of the evaluation of KPIs. With these being said, as ITU Blockchain, we will vote in favor of this proposal.
