Proposal: Temp check - Mission of the Arbitrum DAO [Constitutional]

Squad: DAOStewards

Abstract

This proposal suggests updating the constitution with a mission statement for the Arbitrum DAO as outlined in ARBITRUM: THE NEXT PHASE OF DECENTRALIZATION | by Arbitrum | Medium

Motivation

In order for a DAO to measure the success or failure of it’s actions, it’s important to have a clear guiding criteria for the same. As highlighted in the recent forum posts on pluralist grants or delegated domain allocation

DAO members and service providers are keen on starting grants programs in the DAO. However, without a clear criteria to measure the success of these programs, we will not be able to evaluate if resources are being spent in the right direction.

Rationale

The ArbitrumDAO adopted the current version of it’s constitution as suggested by The Arbitrum Foundation via AIP 1. While the current version offers some clarity on the purpose of the DAO via Section 5: Community Values, this does not clarify the reason for the DAOs’ existence or the goal that the DAO should fulfil.

Before the DAO starts deciding on how funds should be distributed, the DAO needs to first agree on what is its mission in order to judge the success of any of its funding mechanisms. The initial medium post [here] offered insights into why the Arbitrum Foundation decided to launch the Arbitrum DAO:

“The guiding mission when building Arbitrum has always been to securely scale Ethereum, and this security-first mindset is the guiding force behind decentralizing the chain as security and decentralization are closely intertwined. Building a secure and decentralized L2 requires removing any centralized points of chain control so that the chain can operate trustlessly.”

In line with this initial vision, we propose adding this to the constitution to ensure that all actions of the DAO align with this in the future. We propose the following text as the mission of the DAO:

The mission of the ArbitrumDAO is to scale Ethereum with a security first mindset and enable trustless operation of the Arbitrum Layer 2

Specifications

If this proposal passes, we suggest the following steps:

Step1: Add ‘Section 0: Mission’ to the constitution
Step 2: Add the following text under this section

The mission of the ArbitrumDAO is to scale Ethereum with a security first mindset and enable trustless operation of the Arbitrum Layer 2

Timeline

Step1: Request for comments: till 22nd June

In case there are no major objections:

Step2: Snapshot Temp check: 23rd-27th June
Step3: Submit on-chain for formal AIP and call for voting

Overall Cost

There are no costs associated with this change
