SYND airdrop to Arbitrum

Syndicate recently launched the SYND token and their own chain built with Arbitrum Nitro.

The SYND token was launched via an airdrop to selected projects and DAOs, including Arbitrum.

As part of the airdrop, Arbitrum received 200k SYND tokens (1 SYND is currently worth about $1). You can see this allocation on DeepDAO and Etherscan:

This opens up a few questions:

  • Who exactly is the receiver of the airdrop: is it Arbitrum DAO or Arbitrum Foundation?
  • If it’s Arbitrum DAO, what should we do with these tokens?
  • Do we want to participate in Syndicate governance with them? Or should we sell them for stables? Or something else?
  • Should the decision be made by the DAO as a whole, or by the treasury management council (ATMC)?

Curious to hear everyone’s thoughts.

Considering the receiver is to Arbitrum DAO treasury, it would be to DAO first. In terms of what to do with it, I think that will require a proposal that prompts actions. However, overall, I think the default option is to let it sit on the treasury and also ideally, SYND team can present themselves in Arbitrum DAO governance as meta governance itself requires efforts. so in other cases, just holding for now.

Agreeing with Doo here. We should take this opportunity to let the Syndacate team present to us a case on how these funds could/should be used, if there is any utility value wise that can bring either some capital in our treasury, or support to their protocol (ideally both), in a way that requires a semi-passive management like we do for the ETH treasury.

Would ask to the @Arbitrum Foundation to get in touch with the team and potentially coordinating a post in the forum about this topic if they are interested.

Great idea! I’ve had some conversations with Will (the founder of Syndicate) a year ago on Farcaster, let me see if I can still reach him there

This situation is not new for other projects, and the system is already quite well established – for example in Sky (formerly MakerDAO):

  • all rewards received from other projects are added to the treasury (managed by the DAO, meaning these funds clearly belong to the DAO)
  • decisions are then agreed upon and voted on – whether to sell the tokens or take other actions with them

I believe the DAO should also adopt similar treasury management procedures.

hi guys - raihan from syndicate here; where I work with ecosystem projects/partnerships

As noted by @TempeTechie in OP, we are building actively on/with Nitro, and are in touch with many of the core Arbitrum team, as well as folks at Offchain Labs.

For some context, Syndicate’s main offering is smart sequencing for appchains. Many on-chain projects run into issues with managing transaction volume, transaction ordering, or some combination of the two. This can affect project uptime, revenues, etc. We have seen this first hand while running projects with Nike, Degen and others. Our solution aims to mitigate these issues. You can read more at our docs page.

Our goal with our “Communities First” airdrop was to show some love to the projects who have moved the space forward in an impactful way, and to demonstrate that DAOs/communities can still have a say in their governance, funding and more. In a time when so many projects just put up a simple claim page, we wanted to go beyond and empower communities.

It’s not our place to steer the community’s governance solely from the airdrop, but as engaged builders on Arbitrum, I do want to offer a few ideas. Right off the bat:

  • SYND can be staked at this URL: https://commons.syndicate.io/

  • There will be a SYND governance portal hosted by our pals at Agora; of course, it would be an honor to have some DAO members from here be a part of our future.

  • We’d love to work with existing DAO and org members to support Arbitrum aligned appchains, as best as we can.

Down the line, it would be appreciated if we could secure an overall license for all Syndicate affiliated appchains, since they will be using Arb tooling. We’re considering follow-up proposals around the license as well.

Happy to be a part of the community and excited to keep stuff moving forward.

We’re reachable on X and Farcaster. My personal X acct is here (it is mostly just techno and bad puns, but I am always here to chat with members and projects!)

Awesome, thanks for this overview @raihan!

I also got in touch with Will (Syndicate founder) and he said that the Syndicate team would be happy to have a call with the Arbitrum DAO to present Syndicate and their vision. I’ll ask him to set up a chat group with you to coordinate the date and time.
